Low, moderate, and high alcohol consumption increased heart rate within the first six hours. McFadden 2005 included both randomised and non‐randomised studies with a minimum of 24 hours of blood pressure observation after alcohol consumption. Rossinen 1997 and Van De Borne 1997 reported withdrawal of vagal tone and reduced heart rate variability within an hour after alcohol consumption; this explains the increased heart rate. We are moderately certain that medium‐dose alcohol decreased blood pressure and increased heart rate within six hours of consumption. For low doses of alcohol, we found that one glass of alcohol had little to no effect on blood pressure and increased heart rate within six hours of drinking. We wanted to quantify the effects of a single dose of alcohol on blood pressure and heart rate within 24 hours of consumption.

This combination of factors forces the heart to work harder to pump blood, ultimately leading to persistently elevated blood pressure. Up to 16% of individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure may have developed the condition due to heavy drinking. This long-term effect is the opposite of the common misconception that alcohol lowers blood pressure. The body attempts to compensate for the changes, and other physiological responses can lead to a subsequent increase in pressure and heart rate. This temporary fluctuation is not a sustainable or healthy method for managing blood pressure.

In this review, consuming medium (moderate) doses of alcohol lowered blood pressure for possibly up to 12 hours after consumption.

Dai 2002 gave participants five minutes to consume high doses of alcohol and measured outcomes immediately.
